Innovations in Law, Governance, and Culture
With Guide Michael Strong | June 17 - July 24, 2019 (12 sessions); Mon/Wed 10:00 AM-11:00 AM PST
When most people think of “innovations,” they tend to think of technological innovations: the automobile, the airplane, the computer, the internet, etc. But there have long been other kinds of innovations as well: Democracy, constitutions, and rule of law are all innovations in governance that have only become widespread ideals in the past hundred years.
There are also cultural innovations: Companionate, egalitarian marriage (as opposed to women-as-property), children as precious beings (as opposed to disposable creatures), peace as a desirable and possible goal, human rights, equality as a political ideal, racial equality as a cultural ideal, LGBTQ+ rights, and many more.
We take many elements of contemporary life for granted. Long ago hierarchies, dominance, slavery, war, and violence were the norm for most people around the world.
What institutional and cultural innovations might be possible and desirable in the 21st century? We will survey some of the most exciting innovations being developed in this domain and examine real-world case studies.
